Pests
We have our share of black flies beginning late in May and carrying on for a week or two in June. If you are lucky a quick spell of hot weather will rapidly kill them off.
Mosquitoes appear in June but generally are restricted to the evenings, especially on a damp night. These too cease to be a nuisance with the onset of summer.
Deer flies and horse flies will sometimes bother you on the water in the smaller lakes on a sunny afternoon in the summer by buzzing around your head. However, a hat and most standard repellents (Off, Muskol, Skinsosoft, etc.) take care of all of these insects.
If you are there at the height of bug time (early June, usually) and you want further protection, good bug jackets are available for purchase at the Lodge.
There are no poisonous snakes or scorpions in Beauchêne and, as far as we know, poison ivy has never been identified here.
